about

It was sometime in 1996 when I was living in Long Beach, California and started writing songs for what became “Anonymous”. As the songs were completed I would sit down on my couch and record them live, just guitar and voice, into a Walkman cassette player. Eventually I sent the cassette to Steve Wynn in New York and he was very excited and offered to produce the record. My bass player Mikey Borens (45 Grave, The Romans and played on my second record, “Good Times”) and I flew out to New Jersey where we met Steve and his now wife Linda Pitmon (drums) to start recording at Jolly Roger Studios in Hoboken, N.J. I believe the whole thing, recording, overdubs and mixing, was completed in less than two weeks. It was a really special session and the songs came together effortlessly. It was great to have the contributions of Jane Scarpatoni’s cello, Rich Gilbert’s pedal steel and the singing of Vicki Peterson and Susan Cowsill! Oh, and Steve busts a pretty sweet guitar solo on “Disappear”! This was the first record I recorded after disbanding my previous band, Junkyard Love, and this represents (for me) a new chapter in my songwriting. I love the intimacy of this record, it still sounds like I’m standing in that room when I listen to it. There are some side stories that I’ll save for another day, it was a great experience and I’m thankful the stars aligned to make this recording happen.
