about

If I were to pick a favorite from my solo catalog it would probably be this one. This was a wild ride in Mike McHugh’s “The Distillery” recording studio in Costa Mesa, California. A lot of experimentation with song arrangements and recording techniques, a lot of great ideas contributed from everyone involved. This record is kind of dream / nightmare like with the white noise beginning of the record which is rain pouring off the roof that Mike decided to “mic” / record just as I was going to sing my vocal track. When deciding which keyboard to play on “California (Into The Ocean)” we chose the rather beat up and not quite in tune acoustic piano, dusty and hiding in a back room of the studio, I’m so glad we made that choice although I was sceptical at first. I knew I wanted cello on some tracks so I asked my co-worker on the cable tv show “Dinner and a Movie” if his cello playing girlfriend would be interested and she said yes! I gave her rough mixes of the songs I wanted her to play on and a few days later she showed up and had charted her own parts for each song. Normally I will have a specific melody or part in my head that I would suggest to the guest player but I decided to let her have a go and see what she came up with and let me tell you - we were all floored! Her parts were more than I could have imagined, so thoughtful, so melancholic, so beautiful. As she was a union player, and I couldn’t afford to pay her union scale, she asked that I don’t use her real name on the record which is a pity. Therefore she is the wonderful and mysterious cello player - Buick McKane. Soon after the record was completed but not released I was celebrating in my local bar The Prospector and later when I was walking home I was doing a bit of stumbling.. I thought to myself, oh my God, I’m ‘stumbling home from the bar’ and hence the title of this record.
