“New Improved Pain” was the last record I recorded with Junkyard Love and in the context of my catalog it is possibly the most accessible and at the same time the oddest goose in the gaggle. This songwriting phase started to feel “forced” for me but I didn’t realize until after the fact. I felt like I was writing songs for what I imagined my audience wanted to hear, instead of just writing songs from the heart, and this mindset can be very restrictive. Unfortunately this mindset played a role in the termination of Junkyard Love because I interpreted it as “I can’t record the music I want to make with these players”. That may or may not have been true and I am happy with my post JYL trajectory but I believe I “shorted” the players who, to this day, are some of the best musicians I’ve ever played with. The brilliant Eric Westfall was the engineer and found a great old recording studio, Sage & Sound, in Hollywood - check out the mind blowing roster of artists who have recorded there! There’s so much more I could tell but you’ll have to invite me out for a beer or two so I’ll leave you with this (paraphrased) quote from my friend Pat Thomas of Heyday Records fame “Chris, this is the worst record you’ve ever recorded” Enjoy!

Singer-songwriter originally from Tucson, Arizona now based in Southern Germany. Played keyboards with Los Angeles "Paisley Underground" band Green On Red. Spent some time with Giant Sand and is currently the fifth member of The Dream Syndicate.

What a find! This set is really spot on. I played these guys on college radio as a DJ, and saw them in Jackson, MS at a dive called W.C. Don's in the early 80s.
